Having overcome your fear of dentistry, taken refuge in an idyllic rental apartment, travelled undergound to the wine cellars of Buda and escaped to the country there is still some torture and terror to be experienced. But you can do it. Visit the House of Terror. The grey building at Andrássy ut 60 at first merges seamlessly with the rest of the architecture of the street, but since becoming a museum the roof has been extended with a portico that lights the pavement with the word TERROR. The photograph has been flipped to show the text in readable form. The displays are initially in Hungarian and include unfamiliar film but familiar subject matter; armies, concentration camps, damaged cities and oppressed peoples. The museum commemorates the victims of terror, but is also a memento, reminding us of the dreadful acts of terrorist dictatorships. Each room has a printed page in English detailing the relevant facts of the displays. Hungary has somehow survived all this terror and the Hungarians are a very kind hearted and friendly people. |
